NeuVasQ Biotechnologies, a spin-off from the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), is developing pharmaceuticals to sustain or restore neurovascular function, a novel mechanism to interfere with disease progression for the benefit of millions of patients affected by neurological disorders.

To help drive the development of the neurovascular/BBB-focused product pipeline, NeuVasQ is looking for a Head of Preclinical Development. The candidate will join the scientific leadership team and will report directly to the CSO and work closely with other executives and senior leaders.

The position is based in the Brussels South Charleroi Biopark, Belgium.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Shape and lead preclinical research and nonclinical development activities, for a portfolio of projects spanning multiple therapeutic product modalities (small molecules, antibodies, proteins, as well as viral or non-viral delivery of DNA or RNA-based systems)
  • Build and lead a team of preclinical scientists with broad range of expertise
  • Develop robust, detailed plans and budgets for the preclinical team
  • Contribute to designing target product profiles and preclinical development strategies to progress assets from discovery through candidate selections and IND-enabling studies
  • Design, plan and oversee in vivo pharmacology, safety and toxicology studies
  • Build strong working relationships with other research teams, internally and externally, as well as with other functions within the company, to maximize impact of the preclinical team
  • Establish and manage collaborative relationships with academic partners and CROs
  • Responsible for developing and documenting study protocols; for data review, analyses, and interpretation; documentation and reporting of outcomes
  • Provide insights and contribute to go/no-go calls, including with respect to the identification and selection of potential preclinical candidates
  • Participate in issue-resolution teams, where she/he will be required to contribute to hypotheses generation


  • A PhD degree, plus post-doctoral or similar experience, in pharmacology, toxicology, or related disciplines
  • +10 years of proven industry experience in the nonclinical assessment of novel therapeutics, preferably for a broad range of product modalities (for CNS disorders)
  • Strong understanding, broad knowledge of drug discovery and development
  • Proven track record leading nonclinical drug development (pharmacology, toxicology, formulation, regulatory and DMPK) for small/large molecules and/or advanced therapy medicinal products
  • Demonstrated experience designing and executing a broad range of animal model studies, preferably in the field of CNS disorders
  • Teamwork and leadership experience, preferably in a biotech start-up environment
  • Interpersonal skills which inspire the environment, while being diplomatic and critical
  • Highly developed communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in writing (via publications in scientific journals).
